High School Construction Expo |
In 2017, the Alliance for Construction Expo began hosting a High School Construction Expo at Portzen Construction. The Expo is open to all high school students that have an interest in construction or the skilled trades. Schools from Dubuque, Jo Daviess, Grant, Jackson, Delaware and Clayton Counties are all invited to attend the event which is held in April. The students learn more about ten different trades for approximately ten minutes each. Students have the opportunity to learn about trades such as electricians, ironworkers, plumbers and pipefitters, carpenters, glaziers, operating engineers and more. The event gives the students information about the trade and a contact at the apprenticeship program to learn even more about the specific trade. |

8th Grade Construction Expo |
In 2005, the Alliance for Construction Excellence decided to show 8th grade students what the trades are all about. That was the beginning of the 8th Grade Construction Industry Expo. Over two days, more than 500 eighth grade students from Dubuque-area schools spend two hours learning about construction careers and use the tools of the trades in hands-on demonstrations presented by union employers and apprenticeship programs. The event is held annually in the fall. |
